IGT(Land wines)area for white, red and rosé wines in the Italian region of Puglia. Salento is the name for the 100 km long and 40 km wide peninsula with the provinces of Brindisi, Lecce and Taranto, which forms the heel of the boot. The area covers 11,600 hectares of vineyards. Grape varieties authorised in the region may be used. Varietal wines must contain at least 85% of the variety in question, up to 15% may be other varieties. Dual-varietal wines must be blended from at least 50 to 85% of the main grape variety and 15 to a maximum of 50% of other varieties. For the wines, a minimum alcohol content is prescribed for each wine type, but no maturation periods.

The region of Apulia (Italian: Puglia) with its capital Bari lies deep in the south of Italy on the Adriatic coast. The elongated region consists of the spur (the Gargano mountains) and the heel (the Salento peninsula) of the boot. The name goes back to the Apuli; a tribe of the Oscians. The area is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the world, as the Phoenicians and Greeks planted vines here 3,000 years ago.
