The appellation, named after the municipality of the same name, is located in the Côte de Beaune part of the Burgundian Côte d'Or. It adjoins the municipality of Volnay. The Cistercians already owned vineyards here in the 12th century. The cleric Claude Arnoux (1695-1770) described this wine in his famous book "La Situation de la Bourgogne".
