The winery "Bodegas y Viñedos Monteabellón" is located in the municipality of Nava de Roa (province of Burgos) in the northern Spanish region of
Castilla y León. The Garcia Aparicio family has been cultivating vineyards in the DO area Ribera del Duero for generations; the grapes have been sold to wholesalers. The company in question was founded in 2000 with the aim of taking the company to the top of the region in terms of quality. For this purpose, a new bodega with the most modern cellar technology was put into operation this year. The company is managed by Juan Manuel García Aparicio. Since 2005, Isaac Fernandez has been working as a consultant
oenologist, who has worked in the well-known
Vega Sicilia winery and in an advisory capacity at Bodegas Mauro. Finally, in 2008 additional vineyards were acquired in the two DO areas Rueda and Rioja Alta
The vineyards cover a total of 100 hectares of vineyards in three DO areas. These are 70 hectares in
Ribera del Duero in the two provinces of Burgos and Valladolid with 100% Tinta del País =
Tempranillo, 10 hectares in
Rioja (sub-area Rioja Alta) with mainly Tempranillo and some
Mazuelo, and 20 hectares
Rueda with 100% of the white wine variety Albillo de Nava
(Verdejo). These are located in the sites (span.
Pagos) Los Miles, Valcavada, Picarillo and Monroy y Valdián (foothills), Pascuala, Lopa, San Juan, Rillosa, Linares, Valdezate, Tras de la Rubiera and Pozo y Madriles (middle low-water sites with a higher lime content), Pedregal, Valduvienzas and Matambres y Acediano (very high top sites), as well as the top site La Blanquera (almost pure limestone)
There is a graduated cultivation of the vineyards with a strong yield reduction in the medium and higher vineyards. The red wines undergo the traditional
maceration. 70% of the wines are matured in barriques made of French oak and 30% of American oak. Among the premium wines are "Ribera del Duero Crianza" (Tempranillo 14 months barrique) and "Finca La Blanquera" from the district of Nava de Roa as well as from Rioja "Finca Thus Joven" and "Finca Athus Crianza".
