The DO named after the city of the same name is located in the Spanish region of Murcia in the Levant. With 41,300 hectares of vineyards, Jumilla is one of the largest DO areas. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 400 to 800 metres above sea level. Because of the sandy soils with lime as parent rock, this area was spared from phylloxera in the 19th century. Mainly red wines are produced from the main grape variety Monastrell (85% of the area under vines), Cencibel (Tempranillo), Garnacha (Grenache), Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
