The republic in Southeastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula was formerly part of Yugoslavia and from 2003 was an autonomous province of Serbia. In February 2008, it proclaimed its independence by parliamentary resolution. Kosovo is divided into two wine-growing regions, Juzni and Severni. Synonyms are Kratošija, Prhljavac, Varjusszoeloe, Vranac Crmnichki, Vranac Crni, Vranac Ornogorski, Vranac Prhljavac, Vranac Rehuljavi, Vranak, Vranatz, Vranatz Hrstacha, Vranec, Vranek, Vranetze and Vranik. This probably very old variety was already widely cultivated in the Middle Ages.
