The DO named after the city of the same name is located in the Spanish region of Murcia in the Levant. The city of Bullas was founded by the Romans. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 500 to 800 metres above sea level and cover an area of around 2,300 hectares. The red varieties Monastrell and Tempranillo, which account for more than 90% of the total, have been approved, and experimental plantations are underway with Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha, Syrah and Merlot. Rosados are produced to two thirds and red wines to one third. The white wines produced in very small quantities are made from Macabeo and Airén.

The red grape variety comes from Spain. The 100 or so synonyms testify to its great age and wide distribution.
