2007 Valtellina Superiore DOCG Riserva Sassella "Rocce Rosse", Lombardy, Italy

Fairly mature nose, prominent tobacco and old oak, light earthy notes, partly preserved and dried red berries, prominent cardamom spice, dried floral notes, touch of dried citrus zests and iodine, mineral notes become more prominent with aeration. Ripe, tranquil, restrained, firm red fruit on the palate, nutty notes, some old oak and tobacco, hint of black berries, some bacon, pepper and dried herbs, very good substance, depth and persistence, fine sandy tannins, light acid bite, smoky traces, becomes more elegant and complex over a long time after opening, more herbs and bacon on the finish, warm fruit and cake spice on the finish. Only shows its true quality after extensive aeration, keeps on improving for several days.
