The Near Eastern state (formerly Grusinia) east of the Black Sea in Transcaucasia is one of the oldest wine-growing countries. The white grape variety comes from Georgia; the name means "Greens of Gori". Synonyms are Goruli Mcvané, Kvishkhuri, Mtsvane, Mtsvané, Mtsvane Goruli, Suramula and Tetrpotola. In spite of apparently indicative synonyms or morphological similarities, it should not be confused with the variety Mtsvane Kakhuri. According to an unverifiable hypothesis it was allegedly mentioned as early as the 5th century. The late ripening vine is resistant to downy mildew, but susceptible to powdery mildew.
