2000 Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG San Domenico, Lombardy, Italy

Fairly mature nose, some nutty, spicy oak, partly dried red and black berries, undergrowth and wilted leaves, light mineral notes in the background. Fairly prominent oak on the palate, tobacco, fairly tart dried fruit, prominent earthy and mineral notes, fairly prominent fine tannins, dried vegetal notes and leaves, undergrowth, prominent acid bite, good persistence, prominent tart notes of smoked bacon, very full-boded, but the prominent oak also makes it brittle and astringent, much less juicy than it was in its youth, very good finish.

Editor note: Concentrated, definite mineral notes, plums, cherries and red berries, smoky oak, notes of leaves and wilted flowers, oxidative notes. Very concentrated in the mouth, again slightly oxidative, noticeable roasted, smoky oak, but also lots of clean fruit, elegant acidity and mineral notes, wine is elegant rather than heavy, complex flavours on the palate, deep and very persistent, wilted flowers, leather and spices, excellent balance, long, quite juicy finish.
