The winery is located in the municipality of Pontedera (province of Pisa) in the Italian region of Tuscany. It was founded in 1903 and has been owned by the Castellani family ever since. Today the company is run by Giorgio, Roberto and Piergiorgio Castellani. Sabino Russo is responsible as oenologist. The vineyards in the Chianti area cover 210 hectares. These are divided between the Tenuta di Burchino, Tenuta di Ceppaiano, Tenuta di Santa Lucia, Fattoria di Travalda and Tenuta di Poggio al Casone in the Chianti DOCG area (Colline Pisane), and Tenuta di Campomaggio in the Chianti-Classico DOCG area. Tenuta di Poggio al Casone, Tenuta di Santa Lucia and Fattoria di Travalda, with over 50 hectares, are cultivated according to the principles of organic viticulture. The red wine varieties Sangiovese, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Canaiolo Nero and Teroldego are cultivated, as well as the white wine varieties Trebbiano Toscano, Vermentino, Traminer, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo Bianco(Drupeggio) and Viognier

The premium wines from Tuscany include the Chianti Classico "Campomaggio", as well as the IGT wines "Zio Baffa", "Travalda" (18 months in barrique, no filtration) and "Genius Loci" (12 months in barrique). Other wines from areas in Tuscany are DOC Maremma Toscana, DOCG Morellino di Scansano, DOCG Brunello di Montalcino and DOCG Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The DOC wine Salice Salentino comes from Apulia. The Italian vineyards cover a total of around 1,000 hectares. Around 50% of the grapes come from contract winegrowers. Around 25 million bottles are produced annually. About 90% of these are exported to 46 countries worldwide, including Germany, Scandinavia, China and the USA.
