Description to V.T. de Cádiz

IGP area (land wines) for red, rosé and white wines in the region of Andalusia in the south of Spain, named after the port city of the same name on the Atlantic Ocean. The gently hilly area was classified in 2005. Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) started several voyages from here. The region was founded by the Phoenicians around 1100 BC, who also already practised viticulture. The area, which largely covers the province of Cádiz, comprises 1,015 hectares of vineyards in 15 municipalities. In a sub-area of around 800 hectares with some of the municipalities, sherry may also be produced.

The Mediterranean climate is characterised by mild temperatures and is influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean. The soils consist of a mixture of sand and clay (here Albariza) and contain marine fossils. The white wine varieties Chardonnay, Chelva, Garrido Fino, Macabeo, Moscatel de Alejandria (Muscat d'Alexandrie), Palomino, Pedro Ximénez, Perruno, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo are produced, and the red wine varieties Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta, Merlot, Mollar Cano (Negramoll), Monastrell, Syrah, Tempranillo, Tintilla de Rota (Graciano) and Petit Verdot.
