Sovana DOC |
Description to Sovana DOC
DOC area for red and rosé wines in the Maremma landscape in the Italian region of Tuscany. The vineyards of the zone comprise about 150 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Pitigliano, Sorano (with the district of Sovana) and Manciano in the province of Grosseto. The municipality or Vigna followed by the name of the vineyard can be indicated on the label if the grapes come from classified vineyards. There are about 70 such geographical indications. The Rosso and Rosato types of wine are made from Sangiovese (50%) and other authorised varieties (max. 50%). The varietal red wines must contain at least 85% of the respective variety. These are Aleatico (also as Passito), Cabernet Sauvignon, Ciliegiolo, Merlot and Sangiovese. All have the status of Superiore. After 24 months of aging in wooden barrels and another six months in the bottle, all red wines are allowed to carry the designation Riserva.
