Saint-Georges-d'Orques AOC

Description to Saint-Georges-d'Orques AOC

The appellation Languedoc Saint Georges-d'Orques is located in the north-east of the French wine region Languedoc. It was classified as AOC in 2010 and belongs to the second quality category "Grands Vins du Languedoc". In 1787 the later US president Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), who was ambassador to France at the time, became acquainted with the wines of Saint-Georges-d'Orques. He was so enthusiastic that in 1804 he instructed his finance minister to reduce the customs duties on Saint-Georges-d'Orques wines. His aim was to combat alcoholism by developing the consumption of quality wines instead of brandy.

The vineyards cover 250 hectares of vineyards at an altitude of 50 to 250 metres above sea level on soils of limestone, flintstone and sandstone with iron oxide content. They cover the five communes of Juvignac, Lavérune, Muviel, Pignan and Saint-Georges d'Orques in the department of Hérault. Red wine and rosé are blended from at least 2 of the 3 main grape varieties Grenache Noir(Garnacha Tinta), Mourvèdre(Monastrell) and Syrah, as well as Carignan Noir(Mazuelo) and Cinsaut. Well known producers are Château de Fourques, Château de l'Engarran, Domaine Guizard, Domaine Henry, Domaine Icard, Domaine des Quatre Pilas and Domaine de Saumarez.
