Description to Rosso Orvietano DOC
DOC area (also Orvietano Rosso) for red wines in the Italian region of Umbria The zone covers 20 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Allerona, Alviano, Baschi, Castel Giorgio, Castel Viscardo, Fabro, Ficulle, Guardea, Montecchio, Montegabbione, Monteleone d'Orvieto, Orvieto, Porano and San Venanzo in the province of Terni. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, the label may indicate Vigna followed by the name of the vineyard. The Rosso is blended in any blend of Aleatico, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Canaiolo Nero, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, Montepulcano, Pinot Nero = Pinot Noir and Sangiovese (to 70%), as well as Barbera, Cesanese Comune, Colorino del Valdarno and Dolcetto (max. 30%). The pure red wines must contain at least 85% of the respective variety. These are Aleatico, Cabernet (Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, Pinot Nero and Sangiovese.
There is also a much larger DOC area for white wines called Orvieto, which covers both Umbria and Lazio and includes many additional municipalities.
