Pommard AOC

Description to Pommard AOC

The appellation, named after the commune of the same name, is located in the Côte de Beaune part of Burgundy 's Côte d'Or. It adjoins the commune of Volnay. The Cistercians already owned vineyards here in the 12th century. The clergyman Claude Arnoux (1695-1770) described this wine in his famous book "La Situation de la Bourgogne". The vineyards cover 313 hectares of vines. Almost exclusively red wines are pressed from Pinot Noir with portions of Pinot Liébault (a Pinot Noir clone) and Pinot Gris. The easy-to-pronounce name is often cited as the reason why they are among the best-known in Burgundy. But to refer to this alone would be unfair, because they are also indisputably among the best. There are around 30 Premiers Crus with 128 hectares of vineyards. The best sites include Chanlins, Épenots, Fremiers, Jarolières, Pézerolles and above all Rugiens (which is actually worthy of Grand Cru quality). Well-known producers are Bichot (Domaine du Pavillon), Billard-Gonett, Boillot, Château Pommard, Comte Armand, Hospices de Beaune, Louis Latour, Lejeune, Domaine Leroy, Machard de Gramont, Montille and Pothier-Rieusset.
