Appellation in the district of Lasithi in the east of the Greek island of Crete, which is named after the coastal town of the same name. Sitia is one of the four POP areas of the island; west of it in the centre are the areas of Archanes, Dafnes and Peza.Archaeological finds prove that the island has been inhabited since about 1050 B.C. According to Diogenes Laertios (the "Tons Diogenes" was another) Sitia was the hometown of Myson, one of the Seven Wise Men. It is the centre of the region which is characterized by extensive olive growing. The red wine is blended from the autochthonous varieties Liatiko (zum. 80%) and Mandilaria (max. 20%) and matured dry or sweet. The white wine is produced from the autochthonous varieties Vilana (zum. 70%) and Thrapsathiri (max. 30%) and vinified dry.
