Nuits-Saint-Georges AOC |
Description to Nuits-Saint-Georges AOC
The appellation for red and white wines, named after the commune of the same name, is located south of Dijon in the Côte de Nuits part of the Côte d'Or in Burgundy. The northern part extends to the border of Vosne-Romanée, the southern part is partly in the commune of Nuits-Saint-Georges and partly in the commune of Premeaux-Prissey. It is documented that King Louis XIV (1638-1715) was advised by his personal physician Guy-Crescent Fagon to drink a mature red wine from Nuits-Saint-Georges. Similar to the Hospices de Beaune, there is also an annual charity auction here in March called "Hospices de Nuits". The administrative headquarters of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin is also located here.
The vineyards, most of which face east to southeast, cover 310 hectares of vines on pebbly alluvium in the north or muddy deposits from the Meuzin River in the deeper sections, and deep limestone soils in the south. Of these, 152 hectares are classified as Premier Cru (39 sites), whose names may be cited. These are Aux Argillas, Aux Bourdots, Aux Boussellots, Aux Chaignots, Aux Champs Perdrix, Aux Cras, Aux Murgers, Aux Thorey, Aux Vignerondes, Chaînes Carteaux, Château Gris, Clos des Grandes Vignes, Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges, En la Perrière Noblot, La Richemonde, Les Cailles, Les Chaboeufs, Les Crots, Les Damodes, Les Hauts Pruliers, Les Perrières, Les Porrets Saint-Georges, Les Poulettes, Les Procès, Les Pruliers, Les Saint-Georges, Les Vallerots, Les Vaucrains, Roncière and Rue de Chaux (Nuits-Saint-Georges), as well as Aux Perdrix, Clos Arlot, Clos de la Maréchale, Clos des Argillières, Clos des Corvées Pagets, Clos des Forêts Saint-Georges, Clos les Didiers, Clos Saint-Marc, Les Argillières and Les Terres Blanches (Premeaux-Prissey).
By far the majority of red wines are produced, often single-varietal, from Pinot Noir with a maximum of 15% Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. The white wines cover 10 hectares, 7 of which are Premier Cru. They are often produced purely from Chardonnay and a maximum of 15% Pinot Blanc. Well-known producers are Domaine de l'Arlot, Bichot (Domaine du Clos Frantin), Boisset, Bouchard Père et Fils, Jean Chauvenet, Dubois, Jadot, Alain Michelot, Nicolas Morin, Gérard Mugneret, Remorquiet and Jean Tardy. Some winemakers from Nuits-Saint-Georges own plots in the Grand Cru site Clos de Vougeot.
