Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise AOC

Description to Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise AOC

AOC area for fortified sweet wine in the southern section of the Rhône wine-growing region. It covers about 500 hectares of vineyards in the communes of Beaumes-de-Venise (AOC for red wine) and Aubignan in the department of Vaucluse. The wine was already praised by Pliny the Elder (23-79) in his work "Naturalis historia". According to legend, King Louis IX (1214-1270) took it with him on the 7th Crusade in 1248. During the reign of Pope Clement V (1264-1314) in Avignon in Provence in southern France, production was increased to meet the strong demand at the papal court. The second vin doux naturel in the region after Rasteau is pressed single-varietally from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. Fermentation is stopped by the addition of ethyl alcohol. The wine must have at least 15% alcohol by volume and 110 g/l residual sugar. Well-known producers are the Vignerons de Beaumes-de-Venise (90% of production), Château du Trignon, Château Pesquié, Domaine de Durban, Domaine de la Mordorée and Domaine du Vieux Pigeonnier.
