Montravel AOC

Description to Montravel AOC

Appellation for white wines and only since the 2003 vintage also for red wines (until then these were produced under AOC Bergerac) in the north of the region of south-west France. It lies as an enclave in the far west of the large Bergerac appellation. Adjacent to it to the west is the Bordeaux appellation Côtes de Castillon. The vineyards cover around 350 hectares of hillside vineyards in 14 communes between Port-Sainte-Foy and Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne on the right bank of the Dordogne (although 2,100 hectares would be permitted). The soil consists of limestone with red clay as a weathering product on the surface and sediments at lower altitudes.

The white wines are blended from the varieties Muscadelle, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon (at least 2 varieties), the red wines from Merlot (at least 50% but less than 100%), Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec (Cot). The three AOC wines are Montravel (250 hectares) for dry, Côtes de Montravel (50 hectares) for semi-sweet (moelleux) and Haut-Montravel (50 hectares) for sweet (doux) wines produced from botrytised grapes. Well-known producers include the Château du Bloy, Château du Fouga, Château Laulerie, Château Masburel, Château le Mayne, Domaine Perreau, Château Péchaurieux, Château Pique-Segue, Château Puy-Servain, Château le Raz and Domaine de la Roche-Marot.
