Description to Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG

DOCG area (also Sagrantino di Montefalco) for red wine in the Italian region of Umbria. The classification was granted in 1993. The zone includes the entire municipality of Montefalco (under this name there is also a DOC area) and sub-areas of the municipalities of Bevagna, Castel Ritaldi, Giano dell'Umbria and Gualdo Cattaneo in the province of Perugia. The dry red wine is made from 100% pure Sagrantino grapes, the grape variety that gives the wine its name. The alcohol content must be at least 13% vol. For the sweet passito made from raisined grapes, 14.5% vol. is required. The maturing period for both is at least 30 months, of which at least 12 months in oak barrels. Well-known producers include Adanti, Antonelli San Marco, Bocale, Caprai, Colpetrone, Goretti, Lungarotti, Perticaia, Rocca di Fabbri, Scacciadiavoli and Terre de Trinci.
