Kunság

Largest wine-growing region in Hungary in the Pannonian Plain (Alföld) in the south of the country with about half of Hungary's vineyard area. Until 1997 it was called Kiskunság. The vineyards cover 28,000 hectares on mainly sandy soils. After the disastrous phylloxera catastrophe, vines were planted here in the 19th century because the pest does not tolerate the sand. It also stabilised the soil better than fruit trees had done before. The climate is characterised by hot summers with little rainfall and sometimes periods of drought, as well as severe winters with frosts that threaten the harvest.

About a quarter of Hungary's wine is produced here, 70% of which are rustic, acidic white wines of rather simple quality. Furthermore, a large amount of sweet sparkling wine is produced. The most important white wine varieties are Kövidinka, Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Ottonel Muskotály (Muscat Ottonel) and Zöldveltelini (Grüner Veltliner), the most important red wine varieties are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ezerjó, Kadarka and Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch). Well-known producers are Font Sándor and Frittmann János.
