Frascati DOC

Description to Frascati DOC

DOC area for white wine in the Italian region of Latium. It is located in the northern part of the Castelli Romani area and covers about 1,700 hectares of vineyards. The zone includes the municipalities of Frascati, Grottaferrata and Monte Porzio Catone, as well as parts of Roma and Montecompatri. It is a very old traditional wine-growing area. In the town of Frascati there were 1,022 taverns documented as early as 1450. Frascati is probably one of the most famous Italian white wines today.

The wine is blended from Malvasia Bianca di Candia and/or Malvasia Puntinata = Malvasia del Lazio (zum. 70%), in any use of Bellone, Bombino Bianco, Greco Bianco, Trebbiano Toscano and Trebbiano Giallo (max. 30%), as well as other permitted (max. 15%). It is aged in secco, abboccato and amabile and is also produced as spumante

The Frascati Superiore received DOCG status in 2011. The blend of grape varieties is identical and the alcohol content must be at least 12% vol. (Frascati 11.5%). There is also a Riserva with at least 13% vol. Also classified as DOCG was the sweet Cannelino di Frascati.
