Description to D.O. Pla i Llevant
The DO area is located in Mallorca, the largest island of the Balearic Islands, and was classified as Vino de la Tierra (Land Wine) in 1999 and then as the second DO area after Binissalem in 2001. It is named after the Pla de Mallorca plain in the central part, which is bordered by the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, and the Llevant area in the north-east, which is bordered by the Serres de Llevant mountain range. The area covers around 450 hectares of vineyards in 18 municipalities. It has a typical climate influenced by the nearby Mediterranean Sea, with an average temperature of 17 °Celsius, cool winters and dry hot summers with moderate rainfall.
The red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Callet, Fogoneu, Gorgollasa, Manto Negro, Merlot, Monastrell, Syrah and Tempranillo are permitted, as well as the white Chardonnay, Giro Ros, Macabeo, Moll (Prensal), Moscatel de Grano Menudo (Muscat Blanc), Parellada and Viognier. Traditionally, the vines are still often trained in low bush form, but increasingly there is also wire frame training. The grape varieties can be used in cuvées as desired.
