D.O. Monterrei |
Description to D.O. Monterrei
DO area (engl. "Mountain of the King") in the province of Ourense in the north-western Spanish region of Galicia on the border with Portugal. It includes the municipalities of Castrelo do Val, Monterrei, Oimbra and Verín. There are two sub-areas, Val de Monterrei (more flat terrain) and Ladeira de Monterrei (slopes). The DO area Rías Baixas adjoins to the east. The vineyards cover around 650 hectares of heavy, clayey soils, mainly on both sides of the Támega and its tributaries. The climate with Atlantic and continental influences is characterised by hot, dry summers with little rainfall and mild winters. White wine varieties are grown to 60%; the most important are Doña Blanca (Síria), Godello, Monstruosa, Palomino, Treixadura (Trajadura) and Verdello (Godello). The most important red wine varieties are Mencía, Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and Bastardo or María Ordoña (Trousseau Noir). A well-known producer is Benito Santos.
