Description to D.O. Mondéjar

DO area in the south-west of the Spanish province of Guadalajara in the Castilla-La Mancha region, named after the city of the same name to the east of Madrid. In the Middle Ages, wines from here were supplied to the Spanish court. The climate is temperate Mediterranean with little rainfall in summer. The vineyards cover 3,000 hectares of vines alongside wheat fields and olive groves with two very different terroirs. In the south, red, clayey sedimentary soils predominate, in the north calcareous sandy soils. Malvar (Lairén) dominates the white wine varieties with a share of around 80%, other cultivated varieties are Viura (Macabeo), Torrontés (Alarije) and Airén. The most important red wine variety is Cencibel (Tempranillo), others are Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta, Syrah and Jaén Tinto (Mencía).
