Description to D.O. Méntrida

The DO area for red wines, rosé wines and white wines is located between the two cities of Toledo and Madrid in the Spanish region of Castilla-La Mancha in the province of Toledo and is named after the city of the same name. The wines have been known since the 16th century. Except for the foothills of the Sierra de San Vicente in the north-east, the vineyards cover 13,000 hectares of vines on gently sloping hillsides at an altitude of 400 to 600 metres, in some of the more than 50 municipalities even up to 800 metres. The sandy, barren clay soils are poor in organic nutrients.

The area borders on the two DO areas of Cebreros(Castile-León) and Vinos de Madris(Madrid). Together, these three DO areas form the Sierra de Gredos wine-growing region, which slopes northwards towards the Alberche Valley and southwards towards the Tiétar Valley. The continental climate is characterised by long, hot and dry summers with considerable temperature fluctuations and cold winters. The red and rosé wines are made from Garnacha Tinta (80% of the area), Cencibel (Tempranillo), Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The white wines are made from Albillo Real, Macabeo, Verdejo, Chardonnay, Moscatel de Grano Menudo (Muscat Blanc) and Sauvignon Blanc.
