D.O. Conca de Barberà

Description to D.O. Conca de Barberà

DO area in the Spanish province of Tarragona in the Catalonia region, with Conca referring to the crater-shaped valley. It lies between the two DO areas of Penedès and Tarragona at around 500 metres above sea level. It became famous primarily due to the high quality of the grapes produced here for the sparkling wine Cava and delivered to Penedès for production. The special suitability of the grapes from this area for sparkling wine was recognised by the famous oenologist Miguel Torres (*1941). The vineyards cover around 6,000 hectares of vines on calcareous soil.

Two thirds are planted with the white wine varieties Macabeo (the largest proportion), Parellada and some Chardonnay. Trepat, Garnacha Tinta, Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo) and Sumoll, as well as smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, predominate among the red wine varieties. A speciality and technique is the production of two wines per vintage. In the sunny vineyards, ripe grapes are harvested a month before the main harvest and used to make fruit-orientated white and red wines (red without malolactic fermentation) within three weeks. These ready-to-drink Jovenes go on sale in spring at the latest. The grapes from the main harvest are then used for higher-quality, storable wines.
