Description to D.O. Catalunya
The Spanish DO area is located in the region of Catalonia. It used to be part of the Penedès area and was only classified in 2001 on the initiative of the famous oenologist and winery owner Miguel A. Torres (*1941). The vineyards cover 3,600 hectares. The area is divided into two geographically separate zones. The first zone forms the triangle Tarragona in the south, Barcelona in the northeast and Lleida in the northwest, and the second zone is located north of Girona, right on the border with France at the foot of the Pyrenees. The main white wine varieties are Chardonnay, Macabeo, Parellada and Xarello, while the main red wine varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Ull de Llebre(Tempranillo).
