D.O. Arribes
D.O. Arribes |
Description to D.O. Arribes
DO area for red and white wines in the Spanish region of Castilla y León, in the provinces of Salamanca and Zamora, which coincides with the boundaries of the natural park of the same name. The former Land Wine Area (VdlT) Arribes del Duero was highly classified in 2007. It is crossed by the Duero (in Portugal Douro), which forms the Portuguese-Spanish border over a distance of around 90 km. From a geological point of view, it is also very similar to the Douro port wine region on the other side of the border. The vineyards cover 750 hectares of vineyards on the sunny slopes of the river on soils of slate, sand and granite. The climate is continental, with hot summers and mild winters. The red wine varieties Juan García, Rufete, Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mencía, Bruñal(Alfrocheiro), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Syrah, as well as the white wine varieties Malvasía(Planta Nova), Verdejo, Albillo and Puesta en Cruz(Rabigato) are all permitted. The grapes of over 600 winegrowers, often with small areas, are processed by only about 15 wineries.
