Description to D.O. Arlanza
DO area for red wines and white wines in the Spanish region of Castilla y León north of the DO area Ribera del Duero The former Landweinbereich (VdlT) was highly classified in 2007. Vine growing was already practised here in Roman times, and the first written references to it were found in records of the monastery of Santa María de Bujedo de Juarros in the 12th century. At the beginning of the 20th century the area was severely affected by the phylloxera catastrophe. The vineyards cover 430 hectares of vineyards in more than 50 municipalities in the two provinces of Burgos and Palencia. They extend on both sides of the eponymous Río Arlanza at an altitude of up to 1050 metres above sea level. The red wine varieties Tinta del País(Tempranillo), Garnacha Tinta, Mencía, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, as well as the white wine varieties Albillo Real and Viura(Macabeo) are permitted.
