D.O. Alella

Description to D.O. Alella

DO area on the Mediterranean coast in the north-eastern Spanish region of Catalonia north of and near Barcelona. It has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and dry, hot summers. The vineyards cover only 560 hectares. They are partly laid out in terraces to increase the area. The soils on the slopes of the Sierra are dark and clayey, while those on the coast are stony and white, known as "sauló". Important red wine varieties are Garnatxa Negra(Garnacha Tinta), Ull de Liebre(Tempranillo), Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Important white wine varieties are Pansa Blanca and Pansa Rosada (both Xarello), Garnatxa Blanca(Garnacha Blanca), Picapoll Blanco, Malvasía(Planta Nova?), Macabeo, Parellada, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. The area is known above all for its aromatic white wines. It also produces wines for the sparkling wine Cava.
