Description to Côtes de Saint-Mont AOP

The appellation, named after the town of Saint-Mont, lies to the north of the Madiran area in the south of the wine-growing region of south-west France. The former VDQS area was highly classified as an AOC in 2011.

Climate & Soil

The area is located in a transitional region between the Atlantic and Mediterranean climate with mild winters, warm summers and good sunshine. The soils are extremely varied and consist of clay-limestone mixtures, reddish sands ("sables fauves") and gravelly scree.

Vineyards & grape varieties

The vineyards cover around 1,200 hectares of vines. Red wine and rosé are blended from Tannat (60%), Fer/Pinenc (20%), Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and (only until 2020) Merlot. Arrufiac (20%), Petit Courbu (20%), Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng (max. 60%) are used for the white wine.

Producers

Well-known producers are Domaine de Maouries and Producteurs Plaimont. The commune of Sarragachies is home to a very special vineyard with ancient vines and grape varieties.
