Coteaux d'Aix en Provence AOC

Description to Coteaux d'Aix en Provence AOC

AOC area in the west of the French wine region of Provence, named after the city north of Marseille. Aix-en-Provence was a stronghold of the arts in the 15th century under the "Winemaker King" René von Anjou (1409-1480) and the wine from this area was already famous then. The Count of Provence got his name from the introduction of wine at the French court. The painter Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) spent a large part of his life in the city and immortalized the landscape in his paintings. Southeast of the city lies the small AOC area Palette. The vineyards cover some 3,800 hectares of vines in 49 communes, all but two of which are located in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. The AOC area Les Baux-de-Provence forms an enclave. To the east, the large AOC area Côtes de Provence is adjacent.

The red wine is blended from Grenache Noir(Garnacha Tinta), and a maximum of 40% Cinsaut, Counoise, Mourvèdre(Monastrell), Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan Noir(Mazuelo). For rosé, up to 10% of the authorised white wine varieties are also permitted. The white wine consists of a maximum of 70% each of the varieties Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc(Garnacha Blanca) and Vermentino, a maximum of 40% Ugni Blanc(Trebbiano Toscano), and a maximum of 30% each of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.
