Clos des Lambrays AOC

Description to Clos des Lambrays AOC

Grand Cru site or appellation in the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis in the Burgundy Côte d'Or area. It was first mentioned in the mid-14th century as "Clos de Lambrey" after a noble family. After the French Revolution (1789), the property was auctioned off and completely dismembered. In 1981, the site was classified as Grand Cru. After an eventful history with many owners, the Domaine des Lambrays was almost entirely taken over by the German industrialist Günter Freund in 1996. Only a tiny 4.2 acre parcel belongs to Domaine Taupenot.

The east-facing vineyard, at an altitude of about 300 meters above sea level, covers 8.7 hectares of vines on marl soil in the upper part and on clayey-limestone soil in the lower part. It is enclosed by a wall. The Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru vineyard is located to the north, the Clos de Tart Grand Cru vineyard is located to the south. The site is divided into the four Climats (parcels) Les Bouchots, Lambray, Les Larrets and Meix-Rentier. The extremely long-lived red wine is almost exclusively made of Pinot Noir. However, Pinot Beurot (Pinot Gris) and Pinot Liébault are also permitted, and theoretically up to 15% Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc could also be used. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wine is vinified separately by parcel, usually up to 50% of the harvest is declassified and marketed as Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru. The wine is aged in up to 75% new barriques. Fining with egg white is carried out, but no filtration. Annually, about 35,000 bottles are produced.
