Clairette de Die AOC |
Description to Clairette de Die AOC
Appellation for sparkling wine in the middle section of the French wine-growing region Rhône. The Romans were already cultivating wine here at the turn of the century. This is attested to by the Roman historian Pliny the Elder (24-79 AD), who wrote in 77 in his work "Naturalis historia" that the wine from this region was the best naturally sweet wine in the empire. The vineyards cover about 1,300 hectares of vines. They are located in 31 communes east of Crest in the immediate vicinity of the eponymous town of Die on the Drôme tributary on the left bank or east of the Rhone River. Some of them reach as far as the Vercors mountain massif in the far west of the French Alps. The area is congruent with the AOC areas Coteaux de Die and Crémant de Die. 13 of these communes form the AOC Châtillon-en-Diois.
In 1993, the appellation was reorganised. The single-varietal sparkling wine from the Clairette variety produced according to the Champagne method called "Clairette de Die Mousseux" was renamed Crémant de Die and the only slightly sparkling wine formerly called "Clairette de Die Tradition" was renamed Coteaux de Die. There are now three AOC wines, two of which are produced according to the traditional méthode ancestrale (ancient, time-honoured). Although the Clairette gives the wine its name, the Muscat varieties lend the fruity muscat note.
Clairette de Die: The sparkling white wine is blended from Muscat Blanc, as well as Muscat Rouge, Clairette Blanc and Clairette Rose. However, individual producers also make wines from up to 100% Clairette.
Clairette de Die Méthode ancestrale: The sparkling white wine is blended from Muscat Blanc with at least 75%, as well as Muscat Rouge, Clairette Blanc and Clairette Rose.
Clairette de Die Méthode ancestrale Rosé: The sparkling rosé wine is blended from Muscat Blanc and/or Muscat Rouge with at least 75%, as well as Clairette Blanc, Clairette Rose and a maximum of 10% Gamay Noir.
