Cirò DOC |
Description to Cirò DOC
DOC area for white wines, red wines and rosé wines in the Italian region of Calabria. The zone includes the namesake municipalities of Cirò and Cirò Marina (the Classico area), as well as Crucoli and Melissa in the province of Crotone. The Classico area looks back on a very long past and was identified as the Greek Krimisa (Cremissa), which was later called Zrò and finally Cirò. According to a legend that can no longer be verified, a red wine from here was served to the Olympic winners in ancient times. It was also supposedly carried by athletes during training in amphorae from the ball to the toe of the Italian boot. It was (and still is) considered particularly rich in body and alcohol
Bianco is made from at least 80% Greco Bianco and a maximum of 20% of other authorised varieties. The wine types Rosso, Rosso Classico and Rosato are produced from at least 80% Gaglioppo and a maximum of 20% of other authorised varieties (of which a maximum of 10% are Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Merlot). Of the Rosso, there is also a Superiore with a higher alcohol content and a Superiore Riserva that is matured for longer. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, Vigna can be indicated followed by the vineyard name
