The wine-growing area is situated in the north-east of Hungary between the much better known areas of Eger and Tokaj-Hegyalja. The vineyards on tuff stone soils comprise 1,600 hectares of vines. There are more than a thousand wine cellars dug into the mountains. The climate is cool but with plenty of sunshine. Especially white wines are produced. The most important varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Leányka (girl's grape), Olaszrizling (Welschriesling) and Zweigelt.
