Brachetto d'Acqui (Acqui) DOCG

Description to Brachetto d'Acqui (Acqui) DOCG

DOCG area (also Acqui) for red and rosé wines in the Italian region of Piedmont. The zone covers 415 hectares of vineyards in the complete extent of the municipalities of Bubbio, Calamandrana, Cassinasco, Castel Boglione, Castelletto Molina, Castel Rocchero, Cessole, Fontanile, Loazzolo, Maranzana, Mombaruzzo, Monastero Bormida, Montabone and Nizza Monferrato, parts of the municipalities of Quaranti, Rocchetta Palafea, Sessame and Vesime in the province of Asti, and the municipalities of Acqui Terme, Alice Bel Colle, Bistagno, Cassine, Ricaldone, Strevi, Terzo and Visone in the province of Alessandria.

In the 19th century, sweet, red sparkling wines were mainly favoured in Piedmont. Later, dry wines came into fashion, which almost led to the extinction of the autochthonous grape variety Brachetto. In the 1970s, a revival began by the Castello Banfi winery. The wine is made from at least 97% Brachetto (Brachetto del Piemonte) and is produced as Rosso and Rosato. There is also a Spumante (also Rosso and Rosato) and a sweet Passito.
