Barbera d'Asti DOCG

DOCG area for red wine in the Italian region of Piedmont. The zone covers 3,545 hectares of vineyards in 116 municipalities in the province of Asti and 51 municipalities in the province of Alessandria. There are three subzones in the province of Asti. The subzone Nice was classified as an independent DOCG area in 2014. This comprises the municipalities of Agliano Terme, Belveglio, Bruno, Calamandrana, Castel Boglione, Castelnuovo Belbo, Castelnuovo Calcea, Castel Rocchero, Cortiglione, Incisa Scapaccino, Moasca, Mombaruzzo, Mombercelli, Nizza Monferrato, Rocchetta Palafea, San Marzano Oliveto, Vaglio Serra and Vinchio in its entirety. Barbera d'Asti wines can also be produced here.

Subzones

The Colli Astiani or Astiano subzone comprises the entire municipalities of Azzano d'Asti, Mongardino, Montaldo Scarampi, Montegrosso d'Asti, Rocca d'Arazzo and Vigliano d'Asti, as well as parts of Asti (including the areas of Montemarzo and San Marzanotto Valle Tanaro) and Isola d'Asti. The Tinella subzone includes the entire municipalities of Calosso, Castagnole delle Lanze, Coazzolo and Costigliole d'Asti, as well as part of Isola d'Asti. The names can then be indicated on the label if the grapes come 100% from there. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, Vigna followed by the vineyard name can be indicated on the bottle label.

Productionscription

The red wine is made from Barbera (max. 90%), as well as Freisa, Grignolino and Dolcetto (max. 10%). The alcohol content must be at least 12% vol. and the maturing period at least 4 months. In the case of Superiore and if a vineyard is indicated (Vigna), the alcohol content must be at least 12.5% vol. and the wine must be matured for 14 months, at least 6 months of which must be in barrels. There are the wine types Barbera d'Asti, Barbera d'Asti Superiore, Barbera d'Asti Superiore Colli Astiani or Barbera d'Asti Superiore Astiano and Barbera d'Asti Superiore Tinella.

Three other areas in Piedmont with Barbera-dominated red wines are Barbera d'Alba (DOC), Barbera del Monferrato (DOC), Barbera del Monferrato Superiore (DOCG) and Nice (DOCG).
