Balatonfelvidék

Description to Balatonfelvidék

The wine-growing region is situated on the northern shore of Lake Balaton (Plattensee) between Badacsony and Balatonfüred-Csopak in Hungary. It is divided into the three districts of Káli, Balatonederics-lesencei and Cserszegi. Until 1997 it was called Balaton-Mellék, the current name means "Balaton Highlands". It is situated a little further away from the lake, which, however, still exerts a positive influence. The vineyards cover about 1,350 hectares of vines on chalky, volcanic soil mixed with brown forest soil at 100 to 200 metres above sea level. The climate is sub-Mediterranean. Mainly white wines are produced here. Due to the cold air flowing down from the mountains at night, they have a good acid structure and high alcohol content. The most important white wine varieties are Chardonnay, Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Rizlingszilváni (Müller-Thurgau), Szürkebarat (Pinot Gris), Furmint and Zöld Veltelini (Grüner Veltliner). The most important red wine varieties are Kék Burgundi (Pinot Noir) and Zweigelt. Well-known producers are Fodorvin Családi Pincészet, Lesence and Tóth Sándor.
