Description to Badacsony

The wine-growing region in Hungary lies at the south-western end of the northern shore of Lake Balaton (Plattensee), which, like all bodies of water, exerts a positive influence on the climate. It is one of the most famous in Hungary, the wine is also called the "nectar of the gods". The vineyards cover around 1,800 hectares on the slopes of volcanic hills that protect against the cold north wind. Here, mainly powerful, fruity and storable white wines are produced. The most important varieties for this are Kéknyelű, Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Ottonel Muskotály (Muskat-Ottonel), Rizlingszilváni (Müller-Thurgau), Sauvignon Blanc and Szürkebarat (Pinot Gris). The red wines are produced from the Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties. In years with suitable weather conditions, noble sweet wines are also produced (Aszú). Well-known producers are Badacsonyi Pincegazdaság, Fischer Alfred, Laposa, Szeremley Huba and Varga Pincészet.
