Wine regions in Asturias 1 growing regions

Description to Asturias

The autonomous region in the northwest of Spain with its capital Oviedo covers 10,602 km² and stretches between the Cantabrian Sea in the north and the Cantabrian Mountains in the south. It borders Galicia to the west, Castile-León to the south and Cantabria to the east. It has an oceanic climate, very different from the hot and dry climate of central and southern Spain. Viticulture was practised here by Benedictine monks from the 11th century onwards. In the 19th century there were 6,000 hectares of vineyards. Then the phylloxera came and destroyed the stock. Today, viticulture does not play a major role; the region is not known for its wines, but mainly for its cider.

Small-scale viticulture is limited to the southwest around the municipalities of Cangas del Narcea, Degaña, Ibias and Siero. The vineyard area is only around 100 hectares on quartz and slate soils, planted with the red wine varieties Albarín Tinto (Alfrocheiro), Carrasquín, Verdejo Negro (Trousseau Noir), Mencía, Moscatel de Grano Menudo Rojo (Muscat Rou ge) and Garnacha Tinta, and the white wine varieties Albarín Blanco, Albillo, Picapoll Bl anco, Moscatel de Grano Menudo Blanco (Muscat Blanc) and Godello. There is only one VCIG(quality wine) area called Cangas.
