Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG

Description to Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG

DOCG area for red wines in the Italian region of Veneto. This special wine type of the DOC area Valpolicella, which is identical in area, was highly classified in 2010. The zone includes the municipalities of Cazzano di Tramigna, Cerro Veronese, Colognola ai Colli, Dolcè, Fumane, Grezzana, Illasi, Lavagno, Marano di Valpolicella, Mezzane di Sotto, Montecchia di Crosara, Negrar, Pescantina, San Martino Buon Albergo, San Mauro di Saline, San Pietro in Cariano, Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella, Tregnago and Verona in the province of Verona. The five municipalities of Fumane, Marano di Valpolicella, Negrar, San Pietro in Cariano and Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella form the Valpolicella Classico area with largely terraced sites. The Valpolicella Valpantena subzone comprises a smaller area in the Valpantena valley in a niche of Lake Garda, characterised by a special climate. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, all wines may indicate Vigna followed by the vineyard name on the bottle label.

The climatic conditions with the nearby Lake Garda favour the two wine types Amarone and Recioto. Amarone, like all Valpolicella wines, is blended from the local varieties Corvina or Cruina = Corvina Veronese (45-95%), Corvinone (max. 50%), Rondinella (5-30%), as well as other permitted varieties (max. 25%, of which each variety max. 10%). The grapes are dried on wooden racks for 100 to 120 days and rotten berries are sorted out ( botrytis is undesirable). In contrast to the sweet DOCG wine Recioto della Valpolicella, it is vinified dry. It is a heavy wine with a high alcohol content, great aroma richness and a high storage potential of 15 years and more. It has the typical slightly bitter tone (amaro = bitter). There are six versions of this wine: Amarone della Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Amarone della Valpolicella Valpantena, Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva and Amarone della Valpolicella Valpantena Riserva.
