The Weingut am Nil is located in the municipality of Kallstadt (Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. In September 2010, the new owner family took over the traditional winery, which had previously been run by the Schuster winegrowing family since 1841. With a clear commitment to the characteristic features of its sites, the Weingut am Nil has been developed into a top Riesling winery since 2010. It was named after the historic single vineyard Nil, today part of the Kallstadter Saumagen, where the winery cultivates the lion's share of 3.8 hectares with Riesling and Pinot Noir grapes. Other areas are located in the single vineyard sites Kreidkeller and Steinacker (Kallstadt), Herrenberg, Nussriegel and Weilberg (Ungstein), as well as Hochbenn (Bad Dürkheim). Christine Ludt is the managing director and Till Tempel is the cellar master. Close to nature, dynamic and tradition-conscious, the winery offers numerous opportunities to get to know the region from its most beautiful side.
The vineyards cover 26 hectares of vines planted with the white wine varieties Riesling(lead variety), Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Morio-Muskat and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Since the 2017 vintage, gentle pruning has been carried out. A quality-enhancing yield reduction is carried out by thinning out and dividing the grapes. The quality pyramid comprises the lines estate wines, local wines and (Herrenberg and Saumagen) single vineyards.
The heart of the winery is the historic cellar. After the re-foundation, the buildings were completely renovated and the cellar was equipped with the most modern technology. Among other things, the coolable stainless steel tanks with a total capacity of 350,000 litres are stored here. In the upper cellar are the wooden barrels, which are used for the maturation of red wines as well as for some of the white wines. Barrique bar rels (225 to 228 litres) and tonneaux (500 litres), which are medium toasted, are used for ageing. The purple lion symbolises strength and dynamism. These characteristics also distinguish the special terroir of the Kallstadter Saumagen, Ungsteiner Herrenberg and Ungsteiner Weilberg sites. The typical winery colour purple on the label makes the bottles unmistakable. The premium wines of the house are Riesling Kallstadter Saumagen, Riesling Ungsteiner Herrenberg, Riesling Ungsteiner Weilberg and Spätburgunder Kallstadter Saumagen. The bottle-fermented sparkling wines Riesling Sekt, Pinot Sekt and Saumagen Riesling Sekt are also produced.
