The winery in the 23rd district of Liesing in the Mauer district is located in the south of the Austrian capital Wien. Attached is the family-owned Heuriger, which has already been awarded the "Eco-label for Tourism" several times. The farm is run by Richard Zahel. The vineyards cover 25 hectares in the main area of Maurerberg in the Roth-Dürren and Leiten vineyards, on Nußberg in the Preußen, Rosengartl and Langteufel vineyards on the slopes to the Danube, as well as in Oberlaa on the Laaerberg. The white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc make up about 60% of the vineyards, and the red wine varieties St. Laurent, Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon make up 40% of the vineyards, which is very high for Wien. In addition, genetically valuable vine material of the rare varieties Orangetraube and Roter Riesling is cultivated in our own model vineyards. The vineyards are consistently cultivated according to ecological principles, which is symbolised by a butterfly in the winery logo.
The reduced yield is a maximum of one bottle of wine per vine. For some varieties, whole bunch pressing is preferred. A speciality of the house is Wiener Gemischter Satz with the varieties Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay, Weißburgunder, Traminer and others from vineyards up to 50 years old. This classic of Viennese wine and Heurigen culture was forgotten for a long time until it was awakened from its slumber, so to speak, by Richard Zahel at the beginning of this millennium. This wine is vinified in four different styles. The latest creation is the first and only mixed sparkling wine produced according to the champagne method.
The white wines ferment temperature-controlled in stainless steel vats. The classic maceration of the red wines is supported by microoxigenation. From malolactic fermentation onwards, further processing takes place in half new and half used barrique barrels. The "Classics" are matured in stainless steel, the "Lagenweine" in barrique barrels and in the traditional large wooden barrel. The wines are marketed in the lines "Classic", "Lagenweine" (Riesling and Chardonnay with indication of the vineyard on the label), "Reserve" (6 months ageing in barriques), "Grande Reserve" (from particularly ripe, selected grapes, aged up to 14 months in barriques), "Prädikatsweine" (for example, depending on the vintage, a Beerenauslese Rosengartl) and "Trademarks by Zahel" ("Schloss Schönbrunn" and "Wiener Komposition"). The premium wines include "Antares Grande Reserve" (cuvée of all four red wine varieties), "Cabernet Merlot Reserve", "Riesling Nußberg", "St. Laurent Grande Reserve", "Chardonnay Classic" and "Nußberg Grande Reserve". Zahel is considered the "Viennese red wine rising star".
