The winery is located in the municipality of Ingelheim (Bingen area) in the German wine-growing region of Rheinhessen. It was bought in 1900 by Heinrich Opel, one of the sons of the automobile pioneer Adam Opel. Today it is run in the fourth family generation by the great-great-granddaughter Ivonne Countess of Schönburg-Glauchau and her husband Johannes Count of Schönburg-Glauchau. Toni Frank is responsible as cellar master. From time to time, Westerhaus Castle serves as a backdrop for film productions. At Whitsun, there is always a three-day castle festival with jazz.

The vineyards cover 18.5 hectares. These are the rounded-off monopollage Schloss Westerhaus with 13 hectares on heavily skeletonised limestone and Sonnenhang (Ingelheim), as well as Klostergarten and Sonnenberg (Schwabenheim). They are planted with the two main varieties Pinot Noir and Riesling (about one third of the area each), as well as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Auxerrois. Environmentally friendly cultivation is carried out in consideration of sustainability and the promotion of biodiversity (species diversity), especially at the Westerberg site. Only ripe and healthy grapes are processed through selective manual harvesting.

Depending on the type of wine, the wines are matured in stainless steel tanks, in large wooden bar rels or in barriques. They are produced according to the three-stage VDP classification model. The flagships of the house are the "Grosse Gewächse“ from the monopollage, as well as the wines from the Pinot varieties with high ageing potential, which are occasionally offered in a reserve version. The winery is a member of the association Generation Riesling and has been a member of the VDP since 1983.
