The winery is located in the municipality of Ortenberg in the Käfersberg district (Ortenau area) in the German Baden wine growing region. It is named after the castle complex, which was rebuilt between 1838 and 1843, but is only the eponym of the name. A youth hostel is located in the castle in the middle of the winery grounds. The winery was only created in 1997 from a merger of the St. Andreas Hospital and Hospital for the Poor, which was founded in 1300 and is owned by the city of Offenburg, and the experimental winery Schloss Ortenberg, which belongs to the Ortenau district. Administrator and managing director is Matthias Wolf BA, the cellar master is Hans-Peter Rieflin

The vineyards comprise 45 hectares of vineyards in the individual locations Abtsberg (Zell-Weierbach), Halde (Zunsweier), Nollenköpfle (Gengenbach), as well as Andreasberg and the almost exclusively owned Schlossberg (Ortenberg). They are planted with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as with the white wine varieties Klingelberger (Riesling), Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Kerner, Scheurebe, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Gris, Silvaner and Muskateller. The vineyard is consistently cultivated in a natural and environmentally friendly manner, with, for example, greening, confusion methods using pheromones, fungus- and pest-resistant cultivation, creation of biotope areas, reduced yields and manual harvesting in several passes

The quality criteria in winemaking are temperature-controlled cold fermentation, biological acid reduction (usually for red wines and some white Burgundy varieties) and long yeast storage. The bottle label does not indicate individual sites, but rather the winery and grape variety are the main criteria. The wines are marketed in two product lines. These are the entry line "St.-Andreas" and the premium line "Schloss Ortenberg". Bottle-fermented sparkling wines and noble brandies (marc) are also produced. The company is a supporting member of Slow Food.
