The winery is located in the municipality of St. Michael - Appiano a.d. Wine Road (Appiano) on the South Tyrolean Wine Road in the Italian wine growing area of South Tyrol (Trentino-South Tyrol region). The estate with a total area of 13 hectares has been owned by the Count Khuen-Belasi family since 1640. Wine has always been grown here, until 1930 with its own winery, then as a supplier to a local winegrowers' cooperative. In 2012 it was decided to press own wines again and in 2014 the first vintage was bottled. In 2017 a new underground wine cellar with the most modern technology was put into operation. The business is run by Johannes and Maria Khuen-Belasi. Johannes Pichler is responsible as cellar master.
The vineyards cover seven hectares of vineyards on limestone gravel and porphyry weathered soils at an altitude of 450 to 550 metres above sea level. They are planted with the white wine varietiesPinot Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, as well as the red wine varieties Vernatsch(Schiava Grossa) andPinot Noir (Pinot Noir) adapted to the soil conditions and microclimate. The cultivation is carried out according to organic guidelines. The aim is to produce varietal wines with a character typical of their origin.
Some wines are fermented spontaneously with the vineyard's own yeasts. The white wines ferment in wooden barrels and/or stainless steel and are stored on the fine yeast for a long time. The red wines are matured on the fine yeast for up to 20 months in barrel tanks after open mash fermentation. The product range includes DOC South Tyrolean and IGT-Mitterberg wines. Among the premium wines of the house are Pinot Noir Riserva, Pinot Blanc Riserva and Chardonnay Riserva. Almost all wines are bottled in Magnum. A sweet wine from noble rotten berries and an orange wine from Gewürztraminer are also produced. The winery is a member of the winegrowers' association Freie Weinbauern Südtirol.
