Wine Review Report:

Last reviewed: 5 February, 2021

The wine-growing region is located in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg in Germany. The vineyards cover 11,461 hectares of vines, stretching between Lake Con stance and the valley of the Tauber below Rothenburg (Taubergrund). The geographical and climatic conditions are shaped by many river valleys. On its very winding course, the tributaries Rems, Enz, Kocher and Jagst flow to the Neckar. On the riverbanks are many south-facing slopes with widely spaced vineyards. In summer there is enough sun to give red wines strength and colour. Two thirds of the vineyards are steep slopes or hillside sites. Heilbronn is the wine capital...

Germany, or rather the area that is now part of it, has a wine culture that is over two thousand years old. But even before that, imported wine was drunk, as evidenced by a Greek clay wine bottle from around 400 BC found in a Celtic grave. The oldest vineyards were on the banks of the Rhine, Neckar and Moselle. These rivers with their long valleys, as well as their tributaries, are still the classic wine-growing areas today. Viticulture was founded by the colonisation of Gaul by the Greeks and then brought to perfection by Roman culture. The conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) brought Roman viticulture from the Rhône valley to the...

The red grape variety (breeding number 17-92) is a new breed between zwischen Blauer Limberger (Blaufränkisch) x Dornfelder according to DNA analyses published in 2012. The crossing of Dornfelder x Cabernet Sauvignon stated in the breeding list turned out to be wrong. The cross was made in 1971 by the two Helmut Schleip and Bernd H. E. Hill at the State Teaching and Research Institute for Viticulture and Fruit Growing in Weinsberg (Württemberg). The plant variety protection was granted in the year. Incidentally, the new variety Cabernet Dorio was created...

Synonym (also Blue Lemberger) for the vine variety Blaufränkisch; see there.

The red grape variety comes from Germany. It was discovered in 1928 by Hermann Schneider in a vineyard in Heilbronn (Baden-Württemberg) and selected at the State Teaching and Research Institute in Weinsberg (Württemberg). However, it is not an independent grape variety, but a clone mutant of Pinot Meunier. It has lost the wool hairs on its leaves - one could also call it a "back mutation" to Pinot Noir (origin of Pinot Meunier). The vine, which has a poor yield, produces brick-red red wines with soft (velvety) tannins and a wide range of aromas of blackberries, cherries, plums and raspberries. In Germany it...

The red grape variety (also Weinsberg S 341) is a new cross between Helfensteiner x Heroldrebe (which was confirmed by DNA analyses published in 2012). The cross was made in 1955 by August Herold (1902-1973) at the Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt Weinsberg in Württemberg (Germany). Plant variety protection was granted in 1979. The name goes back to Immanuel A. L. Dornfeld (1796-1869), after whose initiative the viticultural school in Weinsberg was founded. The same parents also created the Hegel variety. Dornfelder was a crossing partner...
