The winery is located in the municipality of Winningen (area of Burg Cochem) in the German Moselle
wine region. The winegrowing tradition of the family goes back to 1642. The property, which is known as "Gebrüder Knebel", was divided among family members in 1989. With his wife Beate, Reinhard Knebel (+2004) took over a 1.7 hectare share. After his studies in Geisenheim
and practical experience at well-known wineries, son Matthias Knebel is responsible for the company. Today the vineyards cover almost seven hectares. The largest part is located in the extremely steep Röttgen
site. Here you will find an average of 40 year old Riesling vines, some of which are true to their roots
, in traditional single-pile cultivation. The remainder is spread over the Bruckstück, Hamm and Uhlen
Mostly Riesling and some Pinot Blanc are cultivated. After consistent yield reduction and strictly selective harvesting, the grapes are pre-sorted again before pressing if necessary. The musts are then fermented in wood and stainless steel, in principle spontaneously
with natural yeasts. Great importance is attached to the traditional idea of natural wine
. In addition to the dry wines there are regularly noble sweet Rieslings. Only for the latter are Prädikat designations used.
